Laser Engraver Setup: How to Use Your Polar 350

Hi everyone, my name’s Murphy, and this is Murphy’s Law: a series where I answer some of your most frequently asked questions. We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about the Polar Desktop Laser Engraver, one of our most popular CO2 laser machines. This model is great for at-home crafters or small businesses due to its compact size.

Whether you’re creating custom designs or launching your own engraving enterprise, the Polar has everything you need. It’s all-inclusive, easy to set up, and easy to navigate for beginners. I’ll show you how to set up and use your OMTech Polar 350 so you’ll be ready to pursue your next creative venture with confidence! 

Getting Started

Before we discuss the details of the laser engraver setup, let’s gather everything you’ll need. Your Polar laser engraver package includes everything you need, minus tools.

  • Inline fan 
  • 5-inch to 6-inch adapter 
  • 5-inch duct 
  • Adjustment rings 
  • Screwdriver 
  • USB cable 

Make sure you’re setting up in a well-ventilated area, like a garage or a large room. Anywhere with good airflow and away from sun-lit windows is ideal. 

Step 1: Setting Up the Exhaust 

Proper ventilation is crucial for your safety and the machine’s efficiency. Here’s how to set up your exhaust system: 

  1. Adapter Installation: If you want an extra-snug fit, warm up the adapter with a heat gun so that it secures to the inline fan. 
  2. Duct Connection: Use the adjustment clamp to attach one end of the 5-inch duct to the rear ventilation port on your Polar. Then, connect the other end to the inline fan adapter, securing it with the other clamp. 

Step 2: Connecting Your Computer 

Now, let’s connect your Polar to a computer and power it up. There are three methods for connecting your laser engraver to your computer: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB cable. 

Method 1: Wireless Connection

  • Connect to Wi-Fi:
  • On your computer, search for Wi-Fi networks and select "Polar 350".
  • Enter the password "123456ABC" to connect.
  • Configure Network Settings:
  • If you’re using Lightburn, open "Network & Internet Settings".
  • Go to "Change Adapter Options" and select "Properties" for WLAN.
  • Select “TCP/IPv4” and enter the provided IP address and subnet mask.
  • Software Setup:
  • Open Lightburn software and select "Device".
  • Choose “Ruida” from the dropdown, select “Ethernet UDP”, and enter your IP address.
  • Name the machine "Polar 350", set the mechanical origin to the rear right, and finish the setup.

Method 2: Ethernet Connection

  • Connect Ethernet Cable:
  • Plug in the network cable and open "Network & Internet Settings".
  • Go to "Change Adapter Options" and select “Properties” for Ethernet.
  • Enter the IP address and subnet mask.
  • Software Setup:
  • Follow the same steps as in the wireless method to configure Lightburn software.

Method 3: USB Cable

  • USB Connectivity: 
  • Plug one end of the USB cable into your Polar and the other into your computer. It’s that easy! 

Step 3: Connecting the Laser 

Now, let’s connect your Polar to your computer and power it up:

  • Remote Interlock Connector: Take the remote interlock connector from the toolbox and connect it; this ensures the laser will fire when you use it.
  • Beam Attenuator: Fully turn the beam attenuator clockwise. This controls the laser's milliamp output, keeping it at optimal power.
  • Power Connection: Plug in the laser’s power cord and switch it on.

Step 4: Setting Up LightBurn Software

LightBurn software allows you to control your Polar with precision. Here’s how to set it up:

  • Open LightBurn: Ensure the unit of measurement is set to millimeters.
  • Device Setup:
  • Go to the ‘Devices’ tab and select ‘Find My Laser’.
  • Choose 'Serial/USB', name the device, and verify the x-axis (510 mm) and y-axis (300 mm).
  • Setting Origin: Select the rear-right origin to match your Polar’s setup.
  • Move Tab Functions: Use the directional keys to move the laser head and the home button to reset the origin.
  • Focal Distance Offset: The optimal Z-axis offset is 17 mm minus the thickness of your workpiece (e.g., We used 3 mm Baltic Birch and set the offset to 14 mm).

Step 5: Running a Test Cut

Let's bring your Polar to life with a sample cut:

  • Load a Sample File: Select a simple design, like a paw print, to start.
  • Cut Settings: Set the speed to 30 mm/s and both max and min power to 60%.
  • Power Line Test: Conduct a power line test to ensure your settings are correct—for instance, 60% power should produce around 17 milliamps.
  • Execute Cut: Use the ‘Frame’ function to verify your cutting area, and then press ‘Start’.
