OMTech laser engraver maintainance

Maintaining your OMTech CO2 laser engraver is essential for ensuring optimal performance, longevity, and safety. Regular cleaning of the machine prevents the build-up of debris and dust, which can affect the quality of your engravings and lead to mechanical issues. This comprehensive article will guide you through the necessary CO2 laser engraver maintenance steps to keep your machine as good as new.

To maintain your OMTech laser engraving machine, you’ll need to clean these six crucial sections: the internal optics, external optics, linear rail system, machine body, and distilled water system.

Cleaning Internal Optics

The internal optics of your laser engraver, particularly the focus lens and mirror number three, are vital for precise laser focus and alignment. You should clean these components every other day or at least two to three times a week.

Materials Needed:

  • Cleaning wipes or lens cleaning wipes
  • Laser engraver lens cleaner
  • Cotton swab tips
  • Soft cloth

Steps:

  • Disconnect the air assist hose and unscrew the laser head tip.
  • Remove the silver ring that secures the focal lens, taking care not to scratch it. Place a soft cloth beneath to catch the lens.
  • Clean laser lens using lens cleaning spray or a special lens wipe. Carefully remove debris/laser smoke buildup.
  • Reinstall the focal lens correctly with the concave side facing up.
  • Secure the lens with the silver ring, reattach the laser head tip, and reconnect the air assist hose.
  • Clean mirror number three inside the laser head using a lens-cleaning solution. Apply gently with a cotton swab and a soft paper towel.

Cleaning External Optics

External optics, including mirrors one and two, need regular maintenance to ensure they are free of contaminants that could distort the laser beam. Remember, you should NEVER remove the mirrors during the laser engraver cleaning process.

Materials Needed:

  • Specialized lens wipes or spray
  • Soft paper towels or cloths

Steps:

  • Wipe down the rails to remove old grease and accumulated debris.
  • Apply a small amount of white lithium grease to a clean cloth and gently coat the rails to ensure smooth operation.

  • Apply the cleaning solution directly to a soft wipe or use a specialized cleaning lens wipe.
  • Gently clean the surfaces of mirrors one and two.
  • Be very careful not to scratch the mirrors or dislodge them during cleaning.

Maintaining the Linear Rail System

The linear rail system should be cleaned monthly to ensure smooth movement of machine parts. This will increase the longevity of your machine while guaranteeing swift and easy laser engraving.

Materials Needed:

  • Soft paper towels
  • White lithium grease

Steps:

  • Wipe down the rails to remove old grease and accumulated debris.
  • Apply a small amount of white lithium grease to a clean cloth and gently coat the rails to ensure smooth operation.

Cleaning the Machine Body

Keeping the machine’s body clean is essential for operational efficiency and aesthetics. Cleaning laser engraver machines keeps the system clear of debris, smoke, or dust that accumulates on the surface and interior laser bed. Laser engraving machine maintenance should be done once or twice a week to prevent buildup.

Materials Needed:

  • Heavy-duty cleaning wipes
  • Spray bottle with soapy water
  • Paper towels or rag

Steps:

  • Thoroughly wipe the external surfaces of the machine to remove dust, dirt, and smoke residues. This includes areas like the control switches.
  • To clean the working bed, start by removing the honeycomb tray.
  • If you’re cutting out small pieces, vacuum or brush the debris up to remove from the bed.
  • Spray the laser bed lightly with soapy water and wipe with a rag or paper towel to remove the laser outgassing and leftover residue.
  • Once the bed is dry, insert the tray back into the machine.

Managing the Distilled Water System

Your laser’s cooling system relies on distilled water, which must be maintained to prevent overheating. Whether your water chiller is preinstalled or not, you’ll need to check the water level periodically. If you’re using a water pump and bucket to cool your laser engraving machine, make sure the receptacle has a lid to prevent dust, debris, or smoke from entering.

Materials Needed:

  • Fresh distilled water

Steps:

  • Check the water level every three to four weeks.
  • Replace the distilled water every six months.
  • Ensure that any reservoirs are covered to prevent debris from contaminating the water.

Additional Maintenance Tips:

Not only should you maintain these aspects of your laser engraver, but you should also clear debris from the bottom of your machine to prevent a fire hazard. Clean the debris collection tray or the laser engraver bottom regularly, as applicable. You should perform laser engraver dust removal once a week to prevent excessive material residue accumulation, as this can start a fire.

Remember that your OMTech CO2 laser engraver also requires exhaust system maintenance! Wipe down the blades and surrounding vent weekly to clean the exhaust fan and ensure it is free from debris that hinders productivity. After all, a clean laser engraver exhaust system will perform quicker and more efficiently than a clogged one!

While you’re wiping down the exhaust system, we also recommend cleaning your machine’s internal fan. If your OMTech laser engraving machine is equipped with an internal fan, remove the rear hose located on the back of the machine. Check the fan blades for buildup or debris and use a brush, rag, or paper towel to wipe off the dirt. Once it’s clean, install the hose back onto the fan housing and tighten.
